Our Experience with Arava Melon

This was the first melon we planted and it remains our favorite. Plant it in mid-May in a sunny spot and give it lots of sun and it should provide several melons by the end of August. They thing we like most about Arava is that it starts to turn yellow when it is ripe. We've just never been good at telling when melons are ready!

This winter squash plant comes in a four inch pot hardened off to outside conditions and ready to be planted into a larger pot or in the ground. If it is still early May, we recommend up-potting to a gallon container for a couple of weeks until the weather warms up.

Overview of Arava Melon from the Internet

The Arava melon is a Galia-type hybrid, originating from Israel, known for its consistent and sweet flavor profile. This melon typically weighs between three to four pounds and is characterized by a finely netted, golden-yellow rind when ripe. Its flesh is a pale green to ivory color, offering a soft, succulent texture and a distinctively aromatic and sweet taste with tropical undertones. Developed for high yields and adaptability, the Arava is a full-season melon that also exhibits resistance to powdery mildew. Ripeness is indicated when the fruit develops its characteristic yellow hue and easily separates from the vine.
