Our Experience with Big White Mulberry

Big White Mulberry is just that. Like other white colored mulberries, it lacks the tartness of a darker colored mulberry but more than makes up for that in how sweet it is. For these mulberries, you can eat them after they have transitioned from green to a pure white color. But for the best flavor wait until they turn a little off-white just before they start to ferment. 😉 Our mulberry trees have survived several winters here on Lopez Island including lows in the mid teens. Cold damage is always a possibility in the winter but they will survive to fruit another day! Mulberry trees fruit early in the summer on buds established the previous winter. Their fruiting behavior is similar to Kiwis, Currants, and Grapes so be careful how you prune or you will reduce your harvest the following summer! Our small tree collections are grown from stock on our farm. They are established during the previous year. They are about a foot or two tall. They are well rooted, established, trees that are grown over the last nine months in one gallon containers. They are ready to be potted up or planted in the ground.
