Our Experience with Cherokee Purple Tomato:
We grew Cherokee Purple in 2019 and then again in 2025. It takes a long time to start ripening in the open sun but by mid-August you'll have a lot of these beautifully colored deeply creased works of art. It is indeterminate and vining so make sure you have a tomato cage or trellis!
This tomato plant comes in a four inch pot hardened off to outside conditions and ready to be planted into a larger pot or in the ground.
Overview of Cherokee Purple Tomato from the Internet:
The Cherokee Purple is a renowned American heirloom tomato, with roots pre-dating 1890 and believed to have been passed down from the Cherokee people. This indeterminate variety produces large, beefsteak-style fruits, weighing between 10 to 16 ounces. The tomatoes are easily recognized by their unique dusky rose to deep purple skin, often with greenish shoulders. Celebrated for its exceptional taste, the Cherokee Purple offers a complex, rich, and sweet flavor with a distinctive hint of smokiness. Its dense, meaty flesh and relatively few seeds make it an outstanding choice for slicing for sandwiches, salads, and fresh eating.
