Our Experience with Crookneck Summer Squash
Odd looking but flavorful, Crookneck is a great addition to summer squash dishes for the summer dinner table.
This summer squash plant comes in a four inch pot hardened off to outside conditions and ready to be planted into a larger pot or in the ground. If it is still early May and the weather is cool, you can up-pot to a gallon container for a couple of weeks until the weather warms up.
Overview of Crookneck Summer Squash from the Internet
Crookneck summer squash is an heirloom variety distinguished by its curved neck and bulbous bottom. It typically features a bright yellow skin, which can be either smooth or slightly bumpy, depending on the specific cultivar. The flesh is a creamy white, tender, and has a mild, slightly sweet flavor with buttery undertones. Best harvested when six to eight inches long for optimal texture, this squash is versatile in the kitchen. It can be steamed, sautéed, grilled, or baked and is commonly used in casseroles, breads, and side dishes. The plant grows in a bush habit, producing a steady supply of fruit throughout the season.
