Our Experience with Fordhook Zucchini
While Italian Ribbed is our primary zucchini, we also grow Fordhook as an alternate. We find it to be similar in taste but we have seen it get much, much bigger. It also produces a lot of blossoms is that is something you are interested in.
This summer squash plant comes in a four inch pot hardened off to outside conditions and ready to be planted into a larger pot or in the ground. If it is still early May and the weather is cool, you can up-pot to a gallon container for a couple of weeks until the weather warms up.
Overview of Fordhook Zucchini from the Internet
The Fordhook Zucchini is an heirloom summer squash variety known for its dependable production. This bush-type plant produces straight, cylindrical fruits with a smooth, dark green skin and a slight ribbing. The flesh is a creamy white, firm, and has a classic zucchini flavor suitable for a wide range of culinary applications, including sautéing, grilling, baking, and incorporating into breads or salads. The Fordhook is recognized for its spineless petioles, which can facilitate an easier harvest. It is typically harvested when the fruits are between six to eight inches long to ensure the best texture and taste.
