Our Experience with Galicija Mulberry:
Galicija is prolific and flavorful but doesn't have the intensely sweet flavor of other varieties like Kip Parker, Illinois Everbearing, or Big White. That said, if you are looking for mild mulberry flavor in a big berry, this is the one! Galicija is one of the earliest mulberry trees we have. Under plastic in a hoophouse or greenhouse is ripens in early June. About a month later under the open sky.
Our mulberry trees have survived several winters here on Lopez Island including lows in the mid teens. Cold damage is always a possibility in the winter but they will survive to fruit another day! Mulberry trees fruit early in the summer on buds established the previous winter. Their fruiting behavior is similar to Kiwis, Currants, and Grapes so be careful how you prune or you will reduce your harvest the following summer!
Our small tree collections are grown from stock on our farm. They are established during the previous year. They are about a foot or two tall. They are well rooted, established, trees that are grown over the last nine months in one gallon containers. They are ready to be potted up or planted in the ground.
An Overview of Galicija from the Internet:
The Galicija mulberry is a Ukrainian cultivar noted for its exceptional characteristics. It is a vigorous, self-fertile tree with a compact canopy, prized for producing unusually large, firm, and cylindrical purple-black fruits. The berries have a delicious, refreshingly sweet flavor and are suitable for fresh consumption, freezing, or processing. This variety is highly productive, with young trees bearing fruit within two years. Notably, the Galicija is disease-resistant and demonstrates significant frost hardiness, making it an adaptable choice for various climates and particularly well-suited for organic cultivation.
