Our Experience with Fantail Willow:
Fantail, Dragontail, or Sekka Willow is a willow that has undergone fasciation which is a deformation in the branches that gives them the appearance that the branches are fused. Often fasciation is temporary only affecting one part of a plant, but in the case Fantail willow, the fasciation passes from plant to plant as it is propagated. Willow trees with special characteristics like color, curls, or catkins need to be pruned to maximize display. These special characteristics will only show on first year wood so coppicing or pollarding your trees is an excellent way to maximize the display. Our small trees are grown from stock on our farm. They are established during the previous year. They are well rooted, established, trees grown over the last nine months in one gallon containers. They are ready to be potted up or planted in the ground.
Overview of Fantail Willow from the Internet:
The Fantail Willow Tree (Salix udensis 'Sekka') is a unique deciduous shrub or small tree primarily cultivated for its unusual flattened stems. This phenomenon, known as fasciation, results in wide, contorted branches that resemble ribbon-like fans, providing significant structural interest in the landscape, especially during winter months. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, the reddish-brown stems are adorned with silky, silver-gray catkins that are valued in floral arrangements, both fresh and dried. This willow grows well in full sun and prefers moist to wet soil conditions, making it suitable for rain gardens or near water features.
