Waltham Butternut Winter Squash Garden Start

Our Experience with Waltham Butternut Squash:

Not the most colorful and may not have the character of other winter squash in our garden, but our Waltham Butternut squash plants are always very reliable and productive variety for us.

This winter squash plant comes in a four inch pot hardened off to outside conditions and ready to be planted into a larger pot or in the ground. If it is still early May, we recommend up-potting to a gallon container for a couple of weeks until the weather warms up.

An All-America Selections winner from 1970, the Waltham Butternut is a highly reliable and productive heirloom winter squash. It consistently produces uniform, tan-colored, bell-shaped fruits averaging three to five pounds with a classic small seed cavity and a thick, straight neck. This design provides a substantial amount of usable flesh. The deep orange interior is known for its smooth, stringless texture and excellent, sweet flavor that becomes richer in storage. A vigorous vine grower and an exceptional keeper, the Waltham Butternut is a go-to choice for baking, roasting, and creating velvety soups throughout the winter months.
